Sleep in Children
Healthy sleep is essential for a child’s growth, behavior, learning, and emotional well-being. Sleep challenges are common at many stages of childhood, and small adjustments can often make a big difference.
Why Sleep Matters
Sleep supports brain development, immune function, mood regulation, and physical growth. When children do not get enough quality sleep, it can affect attention, behavior, learning, and overall health.
Common Sleep Concerns by Age
Families may notice:
- Infants who have frequent night waking or difficulty settling
- Toddlers who resist bedtime or wake overnight
- Preschool and school-age children with nightmares or bedtime anxiety
- Snoring or noisy breathing during sleep
- Daytime sleepiness, irritability, or hyperactivity
- Teens with difficulty falling asleep or waking for school
Healthy Sleep Habits
Establishing consistent routines can help improve sleep:
- Keep a regular bedtime and wake-up time
- Create a calm bedtime routine (bath, reading, quiet activities)
- Make the sleep environment dark, quiet, and comfortable
- Avoid screens for at least one hour before bedtime
- Encourage daily physical activity
What You Can Try at Home
Additional strategies may include:
- Offering reassurance without prolonged nighttime interaction
- Using nightlights for children with fear of the dark
- Limiting caffeine and sugary foods, especially later in the day
- Addressing daytime stress or anxiety
- Keeping naps age-appropriate and consistent
