Ear Infections (Otitis Media)
Otitis Media in Children
Ear infections are one of the most common illnesses in young children — and they can be uncomfortable and stressful for families. At Health Care for Children, we help parents understand what’s going on, how to keep their child comfortable, and when medical care is needed.
What Is an Ear Infection?
Most ear infections in children involve the middle ear and are called otitis media. They often develop after a cold or upper respiratory infection, when fluid becomes trapped behind the eardrum and bacteria or viruses begin to grow.
Common Symptoms
Children with an ear infection may experience:
- Ear pain or pulling at the ears
- Fussiness or irritability
- Trouble sleeping
- Fever
- Decreased appetite
- Fluid draining from the ear
- Temporary hearing difficulty
What You Can Do at Home
You can help keep your child comfortable by:
- Offering fluids to stay hydrated
- Using age-appropriate pain relievers as directed
- Keeping your child upright when resting

Avoid inserting anything into the ear unless instructed by your provider.

Prevention Tips
While not all ear infections can be prevented, these steps may help reduce risk:
- Frequent handwashing
- Staying up to date on vaccinations
